Som received his master’s degree in chemistry from IIT Kanpur, India in 2008 followed by PhD from University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany with Prof Thomas Schrader, where he worked on the development of molecular tweezers against amyloidogenic protein aggregation.

Following his PhD, Som did a two year Postdoc at the University of Geneva, Switzerland on PNA encoded technologies to constrain peptides for catalysis, and a one year postdoc at Purdue University, USA, where he worked on the design, synthesis and evaluation of SYK kinase inhibitors as a potential treatment for Malaria. Som joined Wilson and Nelson group in 2017 and is working on small molecule generic inhibitors of protein-protein interactions and, peptidomimetics probe for beta strand mediated PPIs as a part of PoPPI project.
