Matt graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2010 with a first class MChem degree, during which he spent a year working at GSK at their site in Stevenage as part of several ongoing drug discovery programmes. Matt undertook his final year research project under the supervision or Dr David Williams on the synthesis of molecules for DNA sequencing applications. He remained at Sheffield to complete his PhD under the guidance of Prof Simon Jones and Prof Stephen Renshaw. During this interdisciplinary project he worked at the interface of organic chemistry and biology, exploring the chemical synthesis of novel tanshinone derivatives and evaluation of these for anti-inflammatory effects using a zebrafish model. Matt recently joined the Nelson and Wilson group at the University of Leeds as a postdoctoral researcher to work on developing small molecule inhibitors of protein-protein interactions as part of the POPPI grant.
