 Philip graduated in 2009 from the University of Edinburgh with a first class MChem with Industrial Experience degree, which included a placement year at GlaxoSmithKline in Stevenage. In his final year, Philip undertook a Masters project, under the supervision of Dr. Paul Lusby, on the development of a dual-catalyst system for the Diels-Alder reaction. After graduation, Philip moved to York and studied for his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Richard Taylor. Here his work focussed on the total synthesis and structural reassignment of the natural product cuevaene A.


After his attaining his PhD, Philip took on a short-term postdoctoral role in Prof. Iain Coldham’s group at the University of Sheffield, working on the incorporation of fluorine into drug molecules. He then moved to join the Nelson group as a postdoctoral researcher in June 2013 and was jointly supervised by Prof. Adam Nelson and Prof. Steve Marsden. His project was focused on the synthesis of diverse lead-like scaffolds.
