Richard graduated from the University of Leicester in 2008 with a first class MChem degree in Pharmaceutical chemistry which included a year in industry with GlaxoSmithKline. His final year project investigated the cloning, expression and reactivity of a novel tryptophan halogenase enzyme under the supervision of Dr. Paul Jenkins and Dr. Martha Clokie. Richard then went on to undertake his Ph.D. in the group of Prof. Richard J. K. Taylor at the University of York, working towards the total synthesis of the natural product janoxepin.
Richard took up a post-doctoral research position with Prof. Adam Nelson and Prof. Steve Marsden, in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline from April 2012 to March 2015. His research was in the area of lead-oriented synthesis.

Richard moved to Eindhoven Technical University where secured a Marie Curie Fellowship; and then to a lectureship in chemical biology at the University of Leicester.
