Martin graduated from the University of Leeds in 2007 with a first class MChem degree. His final year project  was concerned with the de novo design of MurA inhibitors under the supervision of Dr Colin Fishwick.

Martin's PhD was supported by a SCIBS BBSRC research grant and was jointly supervised by Adam Nelson and Colin Fishwick. His research involved using computational design and diversity orientated synthesis to create novel analogues of platensimycin.
